Airfield, 3/12/19

Debbie and I got out for about 2 hours this evening, before dark, to do a little fishing. The sun was bright, temp was about 60 F, and a breeze was blowing. For the 3rd day in a row, we decided to go back to the private spot we call "The Airfield". Yesterday was cloudy / overcast, breezy, upper 60's, and had mild intermittent drizzle. The bite today was nothing list the craziness we saw, yesterday...but it was fun, anyway!

Debbie was fishing with her micro rig set up just like the day before: rigged with a #0 gold Beetle Spin, 1/32oz white crappie jig head w/red eye, and fitted with a Strike King Smokey Shad shadpole grub. She caught 8 largemouth bass and 4 fat bluegill. so it was still a great afternoon.

I was playing with 4" Zoom Super Flukes, rigged weightless. I had two rods, one in a shad color, the other in watermelon. They didn't want the shad, but loved the watermelon. Also playing with one rod on mono, the other on braid...totally different feel. Hookset is much easier with a light tap on the braid, the mono has a bit of stretch and requires a different technique to set the hook without jerking the bait out of their mouth. I'll let them pick up the bait on braid and carry it about 3 seconds, then a small, quick jerk of only about 6" or so at the rod tip seems to be the ticket. On mono, I have to let them pick it up about the same amount of time, but then relax the line (loose) and give it a quick tap. Oh well, I always enjoy learning new bait and methods.

Here's some pics from the evening. Nothing huge, but loads of fun from a short run to a local pond...
