Martins at the Houseboat

In early 2024, we noticed lots of purple martins flying about, catching insects, skimming the surface of the water around the boats, and being acrobats. I remembered them from my Grandfather's farm, when I was a kid. Grandpa had put up bird houses for them, and there were lots! They're fun to watch, and amazing insect control.

Back around 1994, my oldest son built a martin house. It was an apartment style, with 12 homes in one unit. Being communal birds, they love it. It was stored away in our attic. I found it, assembled and painted a mast, and took it to the lake.

We installed it onto a riser at the end of our dock, and the birds instantly loved it. Each year, beginning in 2024, more return and move in. We're created with the happy "chittering" of them in the morning (they are very 'people friendly'. They fly about all day, singing and catching insects. They're very clean birds, only pooping over the water while in flight, and cleaning the baby poop from the nest frequently. We sit on out front porch every night, insect free!

Kerr Lake, April 3-5 '26

Wow, what a great run to the lake. Temps are up, water is warming, we did a bit of fishing, and enjoyed chilling at a beach.

Appliance alert...

...what is this?? It appeared across from the marina, in a cove.

Kerr Lake, 2-26-26 thru 3-1-26

We got back to the houseboat in late Feb. Wow, it was chilly, but it was so nice to finally get back to the houseboat. The lake was low, down around 294'...see a couple of pics of the ramp down to the dock...

Kerr Lake, 11/8-8/25

We got to spend a couple of days at the lake in early November. The weather was great, and we got to take a night time cruise and run the LED lighting on the pontoon boat.

Kerr Lake, 8/16-17/25

We got a couple of days free, and hit the lake. We hung out at Jaws Beach, and as always, Debbie whipped up some home cooked meals at the houseboat.

Kerr Lake, 8-9thru12-25

Back at our favorite place, Kerr Lake. This was a good weekend, a few drag boats were running, I got a bit of electrical work done on the pontoon boat, and enjoyed the Carolina summer!

Over 5" of rain in the gauge on the houseboat, this week!
